Getting Started

What to Expect at Your First Permanent Makeup Appointment

Booking your first permanent makeup appointment is exciting — and a little nerve-wracking if you don't know what to expect. Good news: a well-run PMU session is calm, collaborative, and far more relaxed than most people imagine. Here's a step-by-step look at how the day actually goes.

Before you arrive: pre-care

A great result starts a few days early. You'll get pre-care instructions, but the essentials are: come with clean skin, be well-rested and hydrated, and avoid anything that thins the blood or increases sensitivity — caffeine, alcohol, fish oil, and (with your doctor's okay) blood-thinning medication. Skip retinoids and exfoliating acids on the area for several days beforehand.

Step 1 — Consultation

Every first appointment opens with a proper consultation. This is where you talk through what you want, look at your natural features, and get an honest professional opinion on what will suit you. You'll decide together on the technique (for example, powder vs. nano brows) and the general look — natural and soft, or more defined.

Step 2 — Mapping & color matching

This is the part that makes or breaks the result, and it's why the appointment isn't quick. Using measurements and your facial proportions, your artist maps the shape — drawing it on so you can see and approve it before any pigment is used. Nothing permanent happens until you love the shape in the mirror. Your color is then custom-matched to your skin tone, hair, and undertone.

You're in control here

The drawn-on mapping stage is your moment to speak up. Want them a touch thinner, a little higher, slightly softer? Say so. A good artist expects it and will refine until you're genuinely happy — because you can't "adjust later" as easily once it's done.

Step 3 — Numbing

A topical numbing cream is applied and given time to take effect, and a secondary numbing product can be used during the session as needed. This is why most clients are surprised by how comfortable the process is — many describe it as light scratching or vibration rather than pain, and some relax completely.

Step 4 — The procedure

Now the actual work: your artist follows the approved map, building the brows, lip color, or eyeliner in gentle passes, checking symmetry throughout. It's methodical and unhurried. Depending on the service, this part typically takes anywhere from 30 minutes to a bit over an hour.

How long is the whole appointment?

Budget 2–3 hours for a first session. The tattooing is the shorter part — the consultation, mapping, and numbing are what make it thorough (and what make the result great).

Step 5 — Aftercare & what comes next

You'll leave with clear aftercare instructions and the products you need. Expect the color to look bold at first, then soften and even flake a little as it heals over the next few weeks — this is completely normal and not the final result. Around 6–8 weeks later, a touch-up perfects the shape and color and locks in a long-lasting result.

The golden rule

Don't judge your brows, lips, or liner in the first two weeks. Permanent makeup looks its worst mid-heal and its best after it settles. Trust the process — and see our day-by-day aftercare guide for exactly what to expect.

The bottom line

Your first PMU appointment is mostly conversation, careful design, and collaboration — with a comfortable, well-numbed procedure at the end. Come prepared, speak up during mapping, and be patient through healing. Do that, and you'll walk away on the road to brows, lips, or eyes you'll love waking up to. Ready to start? Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a permanent makeup appointment take?

Plan for about 2 to 3 hours for a first session. Much of that is the consultation, mapping, and numbing — the tattooing itself is a smaller part. Touch-up appointments are usually shorter.

Does the first appointment include a consultation?

Yes. Every service at Beauty Point begins with a complimentary consultation to discuss your goals, review your skin and features, choose the technique, and match color — before anything begins.

Will I see the final result the same day?

No — and that's normal. The color looks bold right after and then softens dramatically as it heals over 4–6 weeks. Your true result appears after healing and is perfected at a touch-up 6–8 weeks later.

How should I prepare for my first PMU appointment?

Arrive with clean skin and come well-rested and hydrated. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and blood-thinning medications beforehand (with your doctor's okay), and skip retinoids or exfoliating acids on the area for a few days. Your artist will send full pre-care instructions.
